3 Polish football fans arrested ahead of Real Madrid match

Xinhua, October 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Three Polish football supporters were arrested here hours ahead of Real Madrid's home game against Legia Warsaw in the Champions League, the Spanish press reported.

Those arrested were three men, aged 31, 33 and 34, accused of attacking waitresses in a bar in the popular La Latina district in the city center, stealing a mobile phone and attempting to steal cash from the till in the bar.

The police reported the three had been drinking for a period and that one of the waitresses received a head-butt from one of the detainees when she'd tried to intervene.

The incidents have police on high alert over the arrival of around 3,500 Legia fans for Wednesday's match in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium after Legia supporters caused trouble in their 6-0 defeat by Borussia mid-September in Warsaw.

Legia were sanctioned by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for racist behavior and fighting by a section of their supporters in that game, with the club fined 80,000 euros (90,000 U.S. dollars).

The match in Madrid has been classified as high-risk with around 2,000 police and 700 private security personnel on duty to assure there are no further incidents. Endit
