The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has nominated Uganda goalkeeper Denis Onyango for the 2016 African Footballer of the Year award.
Onyango, who plies his trade in South Africa, is among the 30 players that were nominated by CAF, the continent's football governing body.
"I am glad to be nominated for this prestigious award," Onyango told Xinhua on Monday.
The experienced national goalkeeper has been in great form this year, helping Uganda qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and also helped his South African side Mamaledi Sundowns reach the finals of the lucrative CAF Champions League where they beat Egypt's Zamalek 3-0 in the first leg last weekend.
Milutin Sredojevic, head coach of Uganda's national team, said that he is glad Onyango has finally been nominated for the award, and noted that he has been in good form.
Onyango will be up against top players like the African player of the year for 2015 Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who features both for Gabon and Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga.
The gala for the award is scheduled for early next year in Abuja, Nigeria. Enditem
