Equities trading at Nairobi bourse kicks off the week lower

Equities trading at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) kicked off Monday on a low as 11 million shares valued 2.4 million U.S. dollars were traded, against 16 million shares worth 4 million dollars last Friday.

Kenya's leading telecom operator Safaricom was the top mover during the session, actively trading 3.7 million shares at 0.19 dollars after going down 0.50 percent.

Equity Bank was the second best trader, with 3.6 million shares changing hands at 0.30 dollars, a drop of 1.6 percent. In total, the banking sector moved 4.3 million shares, which represented 38 percent of the day's traded volume.

In the energy sector, some 1.8 million shares that accounted for 16 percent of the day's traded volume were traded. KenolKobil, a regional oil marketer, had 1 million shares changing hands at 0.11 dollars.

The poor trading saw the NSE 20 Share Index go down 24.24 points to stand at 3,243.68. Similarly, the All Share Index (NASI) ended 1.14 points lower to stand at 136.39 while the NSE 25 Share Index shaved-off 41.47 points to settle at 3,602.11.

The bond market witnessed an upswing in activity, with securities worth 29 million dollars transacted compared to 15 million dollars registered the previous session. Endit
