1st LD: Explosion at BASF facility in Ludwigshafen, Germany leaves several injured

German chemical company BASF said via twitter that its facility in Ludwigshafen exploded around 11:30 a.m (0930 GMT) local time on Monday, leaving several people injured.

The steam cracker of the BASF facility has been turned off after the explosion. In addition, local residents have been asked to avoid going out and to keep doors and windows closed.

The cause of the explosion remained unclear. Endit
