At least 27 people were killed and over 50 others injured when two buses collided in Rahim Yar Khan district of the country's eastern province of Punjab on Monday morning, an official said.

District Coordination Officer of the district, Zafar Iqbal, said the accident took place when two overspeeded buses coming from opposite directions had a head-on collision in Khanpur area of Rahim Yar Khan.

"One overspeeded bus tried to pass a truck, but its driver could not see another bus coming from the opposite side and had a collision," said the official.

Rescue teams rushed to the site and shifted the bodies and injured to the Sheikh Zayed hospital of the district.

Rescue teams had to cut the ill-fated buses to take out the bodies and injured passengers.

According to the official, the death toll may further rise as at least 15 people are in critical condition.

Iqbal said an emergency has been declared in all the hospitals of the district and the masses have been requested to donate blood for the injured people.

According to local media reports, one bus with students on board was coming from the country's southern port city of Karachi to the eastern city of Lahore while the other one was heading toward Karachi from Sargodha city of the province. Endit
