1st LD: 9 dead, 34 injured as bridge collapses in Bali, Indonesia

Xinhua, October 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

A bridge in Bali resort island of Indonesia collapsed on Sunday evening, killing nine people and injuring 34 others, head of local rescuer said.

The accident happened at around 7:30 p.m. local time when the suspension bridge connecting Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan was suspected of being overloaded, Head of Search and Rescue Office of Bali Didi Hanzar said.

"Too many people and vehicles were passing the bridge during a religious ceremony, so that a rope of the bridge snapped," he told Xinhua by phone from the resort island.

Rescuers immediately evacuated the victims and searched the area around the bridge for other victims that might have fallen into the water, Hanzar said.

"For tonight, the search and rescue operation is halted, and it resumes at 5:00 tomorrow (Monday)," he said.

Scores of people and motorcycles fell into the water just before the bridge collapsed. The number of missing persons is still unknown, Sutopo Purwo nugroho, spokesman of National Disaster Management Agency told Xinhua via phone.

All the injured are being treated in a nearby health clinic, said Sutopo. Endit
