Afghan official says gov't to probe recent fall of Kunduz city

The Afghan government will investigate the recent fall of the northern Kunduz city to the Taliban militants, spokesman for Presidential Palace Haroon Chakhansori said Sunday.

"The reason for the fall of Kunduz would be investigated and those found responsible would be punished," Chakhansori told reporters at a press conference here.

Kunduz city, the capital of the northern Kunduz province, 250 km north of Kabul, fell to the Taliban militants on Oct. 3, forcing more than 22,000 families to leave for safer places, besides hundreds of others, mostly civilians, being killed and injured.

Government forces, after days of fierce fighting, were able to dislodge Taliban militants on Oct. 12 and since then normalcy has been returning to the city.

However, Taliban militants, according to locals, are still posing serious threat to the city and its residents. Endit
