Kenyan leader attends AU summit on maritime security

Xinhua, October 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta left the country on Friday for Lome, Togo, to attend African Union (AU) Extra-ordinary Summit on Maritime Security and Safety and Development in Africa.

"The aim of the Lome Conference is to make maritime space the key driver of Africa's economic and social development," said a statement from Kenyatta's office.

The Heads of State and Government of the African Union member states will hold discussions with experts and leaders from the business world, in order to establish a roadmap on Maritime Security in Africa.

The summit will build on the results of the summits held in Yaounde in June 2013 and the Seychelles in February 2015, in order to put in place an African strategy for the protection of its seas and oceans to provide peace, security and stability, and to make African maritime space the key driver for sustainable economic development.

The Togo summit is aimed at adopting a binding charter on maritime security. Endit
