Sri Lankan President congratulates new UN Chief, vows to work closer with UN

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday congratulated new UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and assured that Sri Lanka would continue its close engagements with the UN.

In a letter sent to Guterres, Sirisena said that Sri Lanka had been an active member of the United Nations for more than six decades and since the January Presidential Election in 2015, he had taken every endeavor to renew and restore the country's meaningful engagement with the UN.

"As such, our relations are strengthened and there is much understanding and productive cooperation between the UN and Sri Lanka. I look forward to the continued engagement of this relationship during your tenure as Secretary-General," Sirisena said. Endit
