Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has condoled the death of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the government announced Friday.
"The passing of your beloved monarch after 70 years as king is a momentous event for Thailand, the Asia Pacific region and the world," Bainimarama told his Thai counterpart Prayut Chan-o-cha in a condolence message.
"His majesty was not only revered by the Thai people for his record period of service to them but represented stability and continuity in our region during some of the most challenging periods of the past few decades," the message continued.
"His majesty guided Thailand with wisdom and dedication and was truly the 'People's King'. He had a unique bond with ordinary Thais and will be long remembered for his particular service to the nation in improving the lives of rural people through the various initiatives he spearheaded in agriculture and other sectors," Bainimarama said.
The thoughts of the Fijian people are with the people of Thailand at the time of intense sorrow, the prime minister said.
