Barcelona confirm Mascherano to sign new contract on Monday

Xinhua, October 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

FC Barcelona confirmed on Thursday that Argentinean defender, Javier Mascherano will sign a new contract with the club on Monday October 17th.

The 32-year-old has agreed a two-year extension to his current deal, which was due to expire at the end of June 2017 and will now remain at the club until end of the 2018-19 season.

The new deal was agreed during the summer in the middle of speculation that Mascherano could be on his way out of the club with Juventus a possible destination.

The Argentinean international joined Barcelona from Liverpool in the summer of 2010 and is now in his seventh season with the club. He has adapted his role from that of central midfielder to play in the heart of the Barca defense, where he has made the majority of his 289 appearances.

During his time at the club Mascherano has won 17 titles and is currently one of the captains in the first team squad. Endit
