Tokyo shares open higher on yen's depreciation

Tokyo shares opened higher Thursday on the yen's depreciation after the minutes of the Federal Reserve's September meeting indicated an interest rate hike in near future.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 104.64 points, or 0.62 percent, from Wednesday to 16,944.64.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 7.76 points, or 0.58 percent, to 1,350.11.

Gainers were led by insurance, transportation equipment and real estate issues. Endit
