A moderate earthquake on Wednesday hit India's union territory Lakshadweep, officials said.
According to Indian Meteorological Department, the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 occurred at 4:01 a.m. local time.
So far there were no reports of damage or loss of life in the earthquake.
"The epicentre of earthquake was Lakshadweep sea located at 5.8 degrees north latitude and 76.0 degrees east longitude," the department said on its website.
"The depth of the earthquake was 10 km."
Lakshadweep, an archipelago off the coast of the southern Indian state of Kerala, is an Indian union territory.
Unlike the states in India, which have their own elected governments, union territories are ruled directly by the Indian federal government.
Last year a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck India's neighboring country Nepal, causing large scale destruction and killing over 5,000 people and injuring another 8,000. Endit
