Tokyo stocks close lower on US shares' retreat, oil prices' slump

Xinhua, October 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday as buying was inhibited by U.S. shares' decline overnight following downbeat U.S. earnings data, while a drop in oil prices also contributed to a dour market mood.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 184.76 points, or 1.09 percent, from Tuesday to finish the day at 16,840.00.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 14.00 points, or 1.03 percent, to end at 1,342.35.

The vast majority of industry categories on the main section lost ground, with iron and steel, banking, and marine transportation issues comprising the day's notable decliners.

On the First Section, declining issues outpaced advancing ones by 1,562 to 326 and trading volume on the main section increased to 1,715.62 million shares from Tuesday's volume of 1,665.16 million shares.

The day's overall turnover was 1,876.1 billion yen (18.11 billion U.S. dollars). Enditem
