Ukraine's sugar exports hit five-year high in September

Xinhua, October 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ukraine' s beet sugar exports reached its highest monthly level in five years in September due to the development of new markets, an industry body said on Tuesday.

Last month, Ukraine has supplied abroad some 39,900 tons of the sweetener, up 21 percent from August, Ukrtsukor, the country's sugar producers' union, said in a statement.

"Recently, the geography of our exports has undergone significant changes. Apart from our traditional destinations -- the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the sugar was exported to such countries as Sri Lanka and Myanmar," Ruslan Butylo, the head of the analytical department at Ukrtsukor, was quoted as saying in the statement.

In 2015, Ukraine's shipments of sugar overseas rose 94.8 percent year-on-year to 114,818 tons, while this year the East European country targeted to export a record 250,000 tons of the sweetener. Endit
