Nigeria to reduce activities of Niger Delta militants

Xinhua, October 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Nigerian government Tuesday said it aims to cut the activities of militants in the Niger Delta region by 80 percent by building the capacity of marine police.

A marine school would be established in oil rich state of Bayelsa to build the capacity of police personnel to enhance service delivery, Ibrahim Idris, Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police said in Abuja, the nation's capital.

Idris told his audience that the Special Anti Robbery Squad would be trained in collaboration with the Nigeria Bar Association, Civil Society Organizations and human rights organizations.

The police chief statement came barely 24 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari said the objective of the militancy in the Niger Delta region is to colonize Nigeria economically.

Noting that the militants are engaging in sophisticated sabotage, Buhari said efforts were on to dialogue with their leaders.

He said that the Niger Delta situation was more complex, since the militants had no central command, and some of them were mere extortioners. He promised that a solution would be found to the unrest soon. Endit
