Myanmar to hold by-election in April

Xinhua, October 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Myanmar's by-election has been scheduled on April 1 in 2017 to fill vacant seats of the parliament, according to an announcement of Union Election Commission (UEC) Tuesday.

The by-election will be held to fill 18 vacant seats - nine in Lower House (House of Representatives), three in Upper House (House of Nationalities) and six in state parliaments.

When the country's general election was held on Nov. 7 in 2015, there were some constituencies which failed to hold the polling.

Moreover, according to the country's constitution, some parliamentary seats were left empty after some parliament members were appointed as government cabinet members. Enditem
