Cruzeiro move clear of Brazilian Serie A relegation zone

Cruzeiro boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation with a 2-0 victory over Ponte Preta in Brazil's Serie A championship on Saturday.

Ramon Abila gave the hosts the lead by firing in from close range before Robinho's shot from distance sealed the result eight minutes from time.

The victory at the Mineirao stadium lifted Cruzeiro to 12th with 36 points from 29 matches, just three points clear of the relegation zone with nine rounds remaining.

Ponte Preto remained 10th in the 20-team standings with 39 points.

Sunday's fixtures will see Atletico Mineiro take on Palmeiras, Figueirense clash with Botafogo and Santa Cruz confront Flamengo. Endit
