Ghana draw with uganda in World Cup qualifier

Xinhua, October 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ghana's Black Stars, the country's senior national male soccer team, on Friday drew goalless with Uganda in the opening Group E 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Tamale.

The tactically disciplined and well-organized Cranes of Uganda played their hearts out to secure a vital point in the crucial encounter against the much-experienced Black Stars side.

A win will have boosted the confidence of the Black Stars as they begin their journey to qualifying to Russia.

Ghana has qualified for the last three editions of the tournament, Germany (2006), South Africa (2010) and Brazil (2014), and is eying a successive fourth berth.

Uganda, on the other hand, has set sights on a maiden appearance at the global quadrennial event.

Ghana will face Egypt on November 13 before playing Congo at home in August next year to end the first round of the qualifiers.

Ghana's Group E competitors, Congo will host Egypt on Sunday October 9.

The winners of each of the five African groups will advance to represent the continent in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars will travel to South Africa after the Uganda world cup qualifier to face their counterparts nicknamed the "Bafana Bafana" in an international friendly in Durban on October 11. Endit
