Canadian man charged with smuggling drugs in foot stool through New Zealand

Xinhua, October 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

A young Canadian man has been arrested in New Zealand for allegedly trying to smuggle methamphetamine worth 8 million NZ dollars (5.7 million U.S. dollars) hidden in a foot stool.

Customs officers arrested the 26-year-old, who had been living in Auckland, at Auckland International Airport on Friday as he was trying to leave the country, New Zealand Customs officials said in a statement.

Customs officers searched a package, declared as an ornate footstool, and found 8 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden inside.

The package, sent from the United States, weighed around 50 kilograms.

Once opened, officers discovered what appeared to be a fiberglass and concrete block with decorative mirrors and beads attached to each surface.

The item was taken apart and 18 plastic bags filled with methamphetamine were found inside.

The man had been charged with importing a class A drug and was yet to appear in court. Endit
