A report published here Friday said that more than 4.5 million Russians left their motherland over the past 26 years, noting the real figure might be a lot larger.

Entitled "Emigration from Russia in the late 20 - early 21 century," the report by the Russian Committee of Civil Initiatives is based on data from the Russian federal statistic service Rosstat and other foreign organizations.

According to Rosstat, of the total, 750,000 moved to Germany, 150,000 to Israel, and 110,000 to the United States.

However, in fact "over 13 to 18 million people have emigrated from Russia from 1989 to 2015," said the report, stressing that the Rosstat data should be increased three or four times because it did not take into account illegal immigrants, people living in two countries and others.

Emigration is becoming a serious problem for Russia, especially among educated young people. Endi
