The number of people employed by the government as civil servants has dropped by 15,500 during the past year, a 3.6 percent reduction on 2015, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported Thursday.
Figures compiled by ONS showed there are now 418,300 civil servants in Britain, with women making up 54.2 percent of the workforce.
The number of female civil servants was a small 0.04 percent increase over 2015, said ONS, adding the number of women employed as senior civil servants, representing 40.1 percent of the senior workforce, was 1.2 percentage points up on the previous year and 8.2 percent more than it was in 2008.
ONS said around 11.2 percent of civil servants are from ethnic minorities, up 0.5 percentage points on 2015, with ethnic minorities making up 12.8 percent of executive level staff. Almost one-in-10 civil servants are also classed as disabled.
ONS reported that only in Wales did the number of civil servants increase, by 1.2 percent. Elsewhere there were decreases, the biggest being in the West Midlands (down 10.9 percent) and the South East (down by 8.3 percent). London continued to account for the highest proportion, with almost 20 percent of all civil servants employed in Britain's capital. Endit
