Five police injured after 67 immigrants flee center in southeast Spain

Xinhua, October 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

A total of five police were injured on Wednesday when 67 immigrants escaped from an internment center close to the city of Murcia in southeast Spain, local media reported Thursday.

The injured police received cuts and bruises during altercations, which began after an immigrant feigned illness. An ambulance was called for and when the doors of the center were opened, the 67 then made their escape.

Photographs published in the Spanish press showed the damage caused to part of the internment center after the escapees made their way into the kitchen, using fire extinguishers to beat the police on guard duty as well as causing extensive damage to the interior.

A total of 38 of the fugitives have since been apprehended, while a mix of local and national police are still searching for the rest.

In 2000, 11 immigrants escaped from the center, while in 2012 a further 25 escaped after attacking guards. Endit
