French president backs EU aid plan on Syria's Aleppo

French President Francois Hollande said on Wednesday he supported a new European Union(EU) humanitarian plan to aid the Syrian city of Aleppo, his office said.

Hollande stressed "the seriousness of the situation (in Aleppo)". According to the office, Hollande orders to support the European initiative aimed at bringing humanitarian aid to civilians besieged in Aleppo.

The EU plan aims to deliver medical, water and food aid from EU stocks in government-held western Aleppo to up to 130,000 people in insurgents-controlled eastern part of the city, and to evacuate urgent medical cases from there.

At a security meeting in the Elysee, Hollande reiterated the need to pursue diplomatic efforts under the United Nations Security Council to punish those responsible for killings of people in the Syrian city and to set credible basis to resume political talks to end Syria's civil war.

During the security meeting, participants also discussed how to cope with terrorist threats in France, improvement of security and the monitoring of terrorist activities, according to a statement issued by the presidential office. Enditem
