The 2016 Women's World Cup is set to witness a new champion as Grand Slam winner Ding Ning and defending champion Liu Shiwen quit the tournament, the sport's governing body ITTF announced on Wednesday.

"After Ding Ning quit the World Cup due to shoulder injury, another Chinese paddler Liu Shiwen recently announced her quit from the tournament due to fever and waist injury. Liu will be replaced by Cheng I-Ching of Chinese Taipei," ITTF wrote on Sina Weibo, Chinese equivalent to Twitter.

After winning the team event for China at the Rio Olympic Games, Ding and Liu faced uphill challenge in their physical condition as they participated in ITTF World Tour China Open and the National Championship in just half a month.

World No. 6 Feng Tianwei of Singapore and 15-year-old Mima Ito of Japan are the favorites to the title this year. Endit
