Palestinian elections commission welcomes cabinet's decision to postpone local elections

Xinhua, October 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Palestinian Central Elections Commission on Tuesday welcomed the cabinet's decision to postpone the local elections for four months.

In a statement, the commission said the decision came in harmony with its bid to temporarily postpone the vote, instead of implementing it only in the West Bank, which could have deepened the internal division and negatively affected the interests of the Palestinian people.

The commission announced that it would proceed with the new electoral procedures soon, expressing hope that it would be able to "include the entire Palestinian territories."

The Palestinian government decided Tuesday to delay the municipal elections for up to four months after the high court ruled they should be held only in the West Bank and not in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas rejected in a statement the cabinet's decision to postpone the vote. Endit
