First Spain call for Herrera after Saul injury

Xinhua, October 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has given a late call up to Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera for the vital World Cup qualifying games away to Italy and Albania.

The 27-year-old Herrera, who has never played for the full Spain side, although he made 15 appearances for the Under-21 side, received the call after Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez suffered physical problems during Monday's training session.

He is the second player to be added to the squad which former U-21 boss Lopetegui named on Friday with Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez also drafted in after Bayern Munich defender Javier Martinez was forced to withdraw with a muscle problem.

Spain play Italy in Turun on Oct. 6 in a match which could go a long way to deciding which of the two sides finishes top of their qualifying group, before travelling to play a complicated Albania just three days later. Enditem
