2 suicide bombings kill at least 6 in Baghdad

Xinhua, October 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least six people were killed and 20 others wounded on Monday in two suicide bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a police source told Xinhua.

In one attack, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest at a crowded area in Amil district in southwestern Baghdad, leaving four people killed and nine others wounded, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The other attack happened in eastern Baghdad, when a suicide bomber, also was wearing an explosive vest, blew himself up in Mashtal district, killing two people and wounding 11 others, the source said.

The toll could still rise as emergency crew work on the site, the source added.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the Islamic State (IS) militant group, in most cases, had been behind past suicide attacks targeting crowded areas, such as markets, cafes and mosques, across Iraq.

Terrorist acts, violence and armed conflicts killed 1,003 Iraqis and wounded 1,159 others in September across Iraq, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq said earlier.

Many blame the current chronic instability, cycle of violence, and the emergence of extremist groups, such as the IS, on the U.S., which invaded and occupied Iraq in March 2003. Endit
