Morozov, Rie named best swimmers at FINA World Cup in Beijing

Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu of Hungary won four more gold medals to complete with seven titles in total at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Beijing here on Saturday.

Yet Vladimir Morozov of Russia and Olympic champion Rie Kaneto of Japan were named the Best Male and Female Swimmer respectively for the two-day event in the Chinese capital.

Morozov snatched the title in men's 100m breaststroke in 56.33, beating Felipe Lima of Brazil (56.86) and Yan Zibei of China (57.30). He also made a big splash in 50m freestyle in 21.06, followed by Benjamin Proud of Britain in 21.33 and Katsumi Nakamura of Japan in 21.54.

"It is a good training to take all the World Cup races to prepare for the Short Course World Championships in December. I don't want to take rest after the Olympic Games because I can keep good mindset in race and that is the reason I broke the world records in the first two legs. I like the short course and my turns is my specialty," Morozov said.

Kaneto was in a class of his own in the 200m breaststroke, touching home first in 2:15.91. Yuliya Efimova of Russia took the silver in 2:19.46 and Breeja Larson of the United States third in 2:22.67.

Three-time Olympic champion Hosszu won the 100m backstroke in 56.56, 400m freestyle in 4:01.65, 100m individual medley in 58.10, and 400m individual medley in 4:33.60.

Hosszu also claimed two bronze medals in 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle, which were won by Olympic champion Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark.

Alia Atkinson of Jamaica was the fastest in women's 50m breaststroke in 29.15, Yuliya Efimova of Russia came second in 29.66 and Katie Meili of the United States third in 29.92.

China captured five gold medals as Xu Jiayu, the 100m backstroke winner, won another title in 200m back in 1:51.50.

Wang Shun took the gold in men's 200m individual medley in 1:51.63. Qiu Ziao topped the men's 1500m freestyle in 14:35.45. Liu Siyu came from behind to win the women's 200m butterfly in 2:05.44. China finished first in the mixed 4X50m freestyle relay 1:31.62.

In other men's events, Chad Le Clos of South Africa showed his supremacy in the 100m butterfly by touching home in 49.35; Myles Brown of South Africa won the 200m freestyle in 1:43.60; Pavel Sankovich of Belarus stormed home first in 50m backstroke in 23.18.

The FINA World Cup will next move to Dubai on Oct.4-5. Endit
