The following are news highlights in major South African media outlets on Saturday.

-- The rand strengthened slightly against the major currencies on Friday despite the South African Revenue Service reporting a trade deficit.

Most analysts had expected a surplus. But a drop in exports resulted in a trade deficit of 8.56 billion rand in August after July's revised surplus of 5.04 billion rand. (Business Day)

-- African National Congress (ANC) branches have overwhelmingly rejected calls for an early elective or consultative conference. (News24)

-- Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has said Lesotho nationals have until December to regularize their stay in the country or face deportation.

Gigaba said on Friday that his ministry will consider extending the deadline for online applications later. The cut-off date is Saturday. The ministry says over 82,000 Lesotho nationals have submitted their applications. (South African Broadcasting Corporation) Enditem
