No.1 seed Tomas Berdych edged out his countryman Jiri Vesely to reach the semifinals of ATP Shenzhen open here on Friday.

It was not an easy match for the defending champion who just recovered from appendicitis. Berdych spent two hour and five minutes to overcome Vesely 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-2.

The world No.9 will face Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in the semis, who eased past No.4 seed Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-2.

Third-seeded Richard Gasquet eliminated Mischa Zverev 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), ending the German's surprising run from the qualifying round. The Frenchman who claimed his 28th win of the season will battle against Janko Tipsarevic for a place in the final.

Tipsarevic was through to his first ATP semifinal since 2013. The 32-year-old Serbian upset Tunisian Malek Jaziri 7-6(6), 6-2. Endit
