The head of New Zealand's biggest farming industry group has been appointed acting president of the World Farmers Organisation (WFO) at a meeting in Geneva, the Federated Farmers group said Thursday.

Federated Farmers President Dr William Rolleston had been the WFO's vice president and would guide the organization until the next general assembly in Helsinki 2017, when a new president would be appointed.

"It's a privilege to be appointed to this role in an acting capacity. The WFO actively promotes the critical importance of a sustainable global farming sector for the future of our planet," Rolleston said in a statement.

The WFO's current work included world food security, climate change policy and practice, the WFO's Strategic Plan 2018-2028 and a number of policy initiatives. Endit
