Condition of Israel's ex-president Peres deteriorates

Xinhua, September 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

The health condition of Israel's former President Shimon Peres seriously deteriorated on Tuesday, his doctor said.

The 93-year-old statesman has been in a "serious but stable condition" since he suffered a stroke on Sept. 13.

Over the last 24 hours, his condition worsened. "His condition is extremely serious," Rafi Walden, Peres' son-in-law and his personal physician, said in a short statement.

Doctors at the Chaim Sheba Medical Center outside Tel Aviv, where Peres is being hospitalized, told Channel 10 TV news that his condition has "dramatically" deteriorated and there is a fear he might experience a renal and respiratory failure.

The recent update came after Peres' physicians gave an optimistic forecast last week, saying his condition has slightly improved.

Peres served as Israel's ninth president between 2007 and 2014.

He ran several times for the prime minister office but failed to gain enough votes. However, he served twice as the prime minister due to coalition agreements.

As a foreign minister in the government of assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, he took part in leading the peace accords that Israel signed with the Palestinians and Jordan in the 1990s.

In 1994, he won the Nobel Peace Prize together with Rabin and late Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.

After he stepped down as president, he remained active in the public sphere through his activities at the Peres Center for Peace, advocating for coexistence and peace between Jews and Arabs in the Middle East. Endit
