Moroccan political parties commenced on Saturday the campaign for legislative elections scheduled on Oct. 7.

Nearly 7,000 candidates have submitted their candidacies to compete in Morocco's legislative elections, according to a statement of the interior ministry on Saturday.

The statement said the top contenders, namely the ruling Islamist Justice and Development party (PJD) and its main rivals the Authenticity and Modernity party (PAM) and the Istiqlal party (PI) have covered all the districts.

More than 30 political parties are running in the elections expected to form a new government and determine political direction of the north African kingdom.

Around 15 million Moroccans are registered to vote in the election to decide the 395-member Chamber of Representatives, or the lower house of parliament. Endit
