Chinese political advisors stress protection of grassland ecosystem

China's political advisors discussed the protection and rehabilitation of the grassland ecosystem at a biweekly consultation session Thursday.
Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, presided over the meeting and gave a speech at the event.
Members of the CPPCC National Committee agreed that the grassland ecosystem is crucial for the country's sustainable development, according to a statement released after the session.
Despite major government ecological protection projects launched since the beginning of the century and protection incentives in major grassland and pasture areas, the restored grassland ecosystem remains fragile, it said.
Some political advisors proposed to improve the current incentive system for grassland protection by training herdsmen to graze their livestock in a more scientific way, and encouraging them and their children to live and work in towns and cities by enabling them to receive adequate education.
Protection should also be enhanced by amending the Grassland Law and drafting related regulations, according to the statement.
Strict law enforcement and more coordinated supervision by different agencies were also suggested. Endi
