UN, U.S. leaders meet on climate change, Syria, Korean Peninsula

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday met with U.S. President Barack Obama, and they discussed the issues of climate change, the Syrian conflict and the current situation on the Korean Peninsula.

During the meeting, the secretary-general thanked the president for the strong and consistent support of the United States for the United Nations on many issues, in particular climate change, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters here.

The meeting took place on the margins of the ongoing annual high-level debate of the UN General Assembly, which opened here Tuesday morning and runs through Sept. 26.

"They discussed ways to end the appalling crisis in Syria and to resume the intra-party talks," Dujarric said, adding that the two leaders discussed the alarming situation on the Korean Peninsula and in South Sudan.

"Turning to Haiti, the secretary-general expressed regret and sorrow at the outbreak of cholera and the profound suffering of Haitians affected," said the spokesman.

"He informed President Obama of the package of material assistance being developed for those most directly affected and said he hoped he could count on the support of the U.S.," he added. Endit
