S. Africa's Desmond Tutu in good spirits at hospital: Presidency

Xinhua, September 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Hospitalized Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was in good spirits and was looking forward to returning home soon, the South African Presidency said Tuesday.

This came after a hoax report caused a social media stir by claiming that Tutu had died in hospital.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa paid a visit on Tuesday to Tutu who was recovering from a recent surgery in a Cape Town hospital, the Presidency said.

"I was encouraged to see the Archbishop in high spirits, sharing light moments with his family and friends. He was jovial as usual, engaging on subjects ranging from education to politics," said Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa conveyed to the Archbishop, his wife and family the best wishes of the government and people of South Africa for his speedy recovery, Ramaphosa's spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said.

Tutu was re-admitted to hospital on Saturday only a few days after being discharged following surgery more than a week ago due to recurring infections resulting from prostate cancer treatment.

Also on Tuesday, Tutu's daughter Mpho denounced the hoax report.

These fake stories were "very disturbing and incredibly unkind to not only the family but to people around the world who really do love and care and support the Arch", she said. Endit
