Eight charged for terrorist plans in Rio Olympics

Xinhua, September 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Eight people who were arrested in July for making a terrorist attempt during the 2016 Olympic Games were charged with several crimes, the Brazilian government announced Monday.

Federal judge Marcos Josegrei da Silva accepted the accusations made by the prosecution. This is the first indictment made under Brazil's new anti-terrorism law.

The eight men were arrested in the Federal Police's so-called Operation Hashtag, and were charged with promotion of terrorism organizations, criminal associations, corruption of minors and recruitment for terrorist organizations.

Since they were arrested, the accused are being kept at the Federal Prison of Campo Grande, a facility with maximum security measures.

The accused promoted terrorism through social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and through telegrams and e-mails, said the judge.

According to the Brazilian laws, promotion of terrorist organizations is a crime punishable with five to eight years of prison, recruitment for terrorist organizations 12 to 30 years of prison and corruption of minors one to four years of prison. Endi
