Former Boko Haram spokesman under psychiatric investigation: police

Xinhua, September 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Arrested former spokesman of the Boko Haram sect, Ali Konduga, is under psychiatric investigation in restive northeast Nigeria's Borno State, the police said Monday.

State police spokesperson Victor Isuku, who disclosed this to reporters in Maiduguri, the state capital, said the police had placed Konduga under psychiatric investigation.

This, the officer said, followed Konduga's display of abnormal behavior since his arrest last week.

The police spokesperson, who said the suspect was sentenced to three years imprisonment for complicity in Boko Haram activities, added that the police had commenced investigations into his case and would take necessary action once discharged.

Boko Haram, which pledged allegiance to Islamic State in 2015, has been embroiled in an apparent leadership struggle. The military claimed to have wounded the sect's longtime leader, Abubakar Shekau during an air raid in August. Endit
