Fiji's sugar industry picks up slowly after natural disasters

Xinhua, September 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Fiji's sugar industry has been picking up slowly since the natural disasters that occurred earlier this year, the government-owned Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) reported Monday.

To date, a total of 735,000 tons of sugarcane has been crushed producing just over 77,000 tons of raw sugar, the FBC said.

Abdul Khan, chief executive of the Fiji Sugar Corporation said the industry is slowly getting back as it suffered two major droughts and Tropical Cyclone Winston in February.

The monster cyclone took 44 lives and left a path of massive destruction.

"The result is reasonable and we always keep pushing and hopefully by the end of the season we will see improvements going forward as well," said Khan, adding that one major mill will remain closed for the remainder of this crushing season.

The sugar industry is a pillar for Fiji's economy, just like the tourism industry. Endit
