Update: Israeli soldiers kill Palestinian after alleged attacks: Medics

Xinhua, September 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian and critically wounded his wife near the southern West Bank city of Hebron on Friday afternoon, medical sources said.

The man, who drove a car, was killed and his wife sitting next to him was critically wounded, the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) health ministry said in an emailed press statement.

However, Israel Public Radio quoted Israeli army sources as saying the pair were killed after they attempted to drive over Israeli settlers.

Earlier reports said the driver and his wife were both killed, but official medical sources confirmed only the driver died.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses in East Jerusalem said an Israeli police officer shot dead a Palestinian man who holds the Jordanian nationality at the entrance to Damascus Gate in the Old City on Friday afternoon.

A year-long spate of violence in Israel and the West Bank has killed at least 230 Palestinians and 34 Israelis.

Israeli leaders accuse the Palestinian National Authority of "inciting" the unrest, while the Palestinians say it is the result of 49 years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, home to more than five million Palestinians, where they wish to establish their own state.
