24 people dead, several injured in road accident in northern Zambia

Twenty-four people were killed while several others injured in a road traffic accident in the northern town of Serenje in Zambia, the police confirmed on Friday.

The accident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday happened when a bus carrying 69 passengers coming from the northern town of Nakonde failed to negotiate a curve and flipped, killing 21 people on the spot.

Esther Katongo, the police deputy spokesperson said the other three people were officials from the road safety agency and firefighters who had rushed to the accident and died when a truck coming from the northern part crashed into their vehicle at the accident scene.

She said the officers died on the spot while four others sustained injuries and are admitted at a local hospital.

Other local media reported that more people were trapped under the bus and a rescue operation was underway to retrieve them. Pictures on social media showed the mangled bus lying on its side. Endit
