Switzerland sees sharp drop in victims of road traffic accidents in H1

Xinhua, September 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Swiss Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) reported on Wednesday that 85 people died on the confederation's roads in the first six months of 2016, 32 fewer fatalities than were recorded over the same period last year.

Representing a 27 percent drop, FEDRO noted that the decrease was particularly evident in the number of motorcyclist and cyclist deaths (down 62 and 29 percent respectively).

FEDRO attributed this trend to harsh weather conditions at the beginning of the year, resulting in fewer motorcyclists and cyclists taking to the roads.

Pedestrian deaths also registered a significant decrease, with 19 percent fewer people dying from road collisions in the first half the year.

According to Swiss statistics, 17,736 road traffic accidents were reported in 2015, resulting in 253 deaths, 3,830 people being seriously injured and 17,708 lightly injured. Endit
