Malaysia reports 2 more new Zika cases

Malaysia's health ministry reported two more new cases of Zika virus, including a two-month pregnant woman who lives in Sarawak of east Malaysia.

Health Minister Dr. S. Subramaniam said in a statement on Tuesday night that the mosquito-borne virus was detected in the 35-year-old pregnant woman, who last visited Singapore in July and her 39-year-old sister, who went to Sarawak to visit the sister on Aug. 26. Both of them began to show symptoms on Sept. 6 and later tested positive for Zika infections.

The two new cases bring the total number of Zika infections reported in the country to six since Sept. 1, including two pregnant women.

S. Subramaniam added that in the same period, 68 patients who had symptoms of Zika were tested and all of them showed negative results.

The minister said prevention and vector control activities have been carried out in the patients' residential areas.

He also urged the public including pregnant women, to protect themselves from mosquito bites by using repellent. Enditem
