1st LD: Karen Karapetyan appointed as prime minister of Armenia

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on Tuesday appointed Karen Karapetyan as the country's new prime minister, according to a government statement.

Prior to his appointment as prime minister, Karapetyan worked as deputy general director for international projects at Gazprom Energy Holding.

Karapetyan is a member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA).He served as the mayor of Yerevan in 2010-2011.

The outgoing prime minister, Hovik Abrahamyan, resigned on Sept. 8 after serving in the post for three years.

Abrahamyan said in a statement that Armenian society remained polarized, and called for the society and the government to work for the welfare of all citizens.

He said that he resigned from his post to give the president an opportunity to form a new government. Endi
