Former British PM Cameron resigns as Tory MP

Former British Prime Minister David Cameron has resigned as a Conservative Member of Parliament two months after he quit as prime minister in the wake of the June Brexit referendum.

Cameron told BBC in an interview that he was standing down because he does not want things he says on the backbenches to be "distraction."

He said that he thought about the decision long and hard and it isn't really possible to be a proper backbench MP as a former prime minister.

Cameron stepped down as the MP for the British constituency of Witney. The 49-year-old has earlier said he would continue as an MP until the next general election.

The politician, who had represented Witney since 2001, became Conservative leader in 2005 and served as prime minister for six years from 2010. Endit
