Kenyan police intensify search for terrorists in Mombasa

Xinhua, September 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Kenya's security officers have intensified operations to hunt for more terror suspects behind Sunday's foiled suicide bomb attack at a police station in the coastal city.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said on Monday that three more suspected accomplices of three suicide bombers shot dead on Sunday have been arrested in connection to the foiled attack at the central police station in Mombasa

Boinnet said the police investigators have also managed to identify two of the three women shot dead on Sunday while trying to bomb the station.

This brings the total number of suspects to four after one person was arrested earlier on Sunday for housing the three women within Kibokoni estate in Mombasa.

"Immediate investigations into the incident revealed the attackers as Tasnim Yakub Abdullahi Farah and Fatuma Omar who hails from Kibokoni, Mombasa County. The third attacker is yet to be identified," Boinnet said in a statement issued in Nairobi.

He said further investigations have led to a thorough search at the residence of Tasnim in Mombasa where three other suspected accomplices -- all Somali refugees -- were found and arrested.

"The three suspected accomplices were established to be Somali refugees - Saeda Ali Haji, Naema Nahamed Ahmed and Shukri Ali Haji. The three were being hosted by Tasnim in Kibokoni and are now in custody, assisting the police with investigations," Boinnet said.

He said security operations are ongoing in the tourism resort city to identify and arrest all those who may have been involved in the planning and execution of the Sunday attack. Endit
