Parliamentary elections underway in Belarus

Xinhua, September 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Belarus started on Sunday the 2016 elections for the House of Representatives of the National Assembly.

Up to 500 candidates applied for 110 seats in the lower house of the Belarusian parliament.

This year's elections are held according to new rules -- in a single round. A simple majority of the votes will decide the winner.

The preliminary voting took place on Sept. 6-10, with 31.29 percent of voter turnout, according to the Central Election Commission of Belarus.

Over 800 international observers have been accredited to observe the voting process, around 400 of which are from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and 334 from the Commonwealth of Independent States. Endi
