An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 struck off the coast of Japan's east Ibaraki Prefecture, which borders the Pacific Ocean northeast of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said on Friday.

The temblor struck at 8:53 p.m. local time at a latitude of 36.4 degrees north and a longitude of 141.0 degrees east, the agency said.

The quake struck at a depth of 50 km and registered 3 on Japan's seismic scale which peaks at 7, the agency said.

No tsunami advisories have been issued as a result of the quake, the weather agency also said. Endit
