At least four dead in train crash in northwest Spain

At least four people have been killed after the derailment of a train on Friday in O Porrino, close to the city of Pontevedra in the regional of Galicia, northwest Spain.

One of the victims has been confirmed by the mayor of O Porrino as the driver of the train.

The train was run by the Portuguese rail operator, Combois Portugal, and covering the route between Vigo and Porto with over 60 passengers onboard.

The accident happened just outside of O Porrino station at around 9:30 a.m. local time.

For unknown reasons, the first wagon of the train came off the track, causing the deaths and "numerous" injuries, with early reports saying that up to 50 people were injured.

Rescue services have been treating those more seriously wounded at the scene, while the majority of the passengers aboard were able to escape from the train and make their way to safe areas along the track.

Adif, the company which runs Spain's railway infrastructure, issued a communique confirming that "rail traffic has been interrupted between the stations of Louedo-Valos and O Porrino, due to an incident with the infrastructure for medium and long distance trains circulating between Vigo and Ourense and Vigo and Santiago de Compostela."

The firm added that it has opened an investigation into the accident. Endit
